Hearty Congratulations and prayerful wishes to Msgr. Alex
His Holiness Pope Francis appointed Father Alex Joseph Vadakumthala, former President of Canon Law Society
of India and Vicar General of Verapoly archdiocese , as the new bishop of Kannur, Kerala.
Fr. Alex was born on June 14, 1959, at Maradu- Panangad in Kerala’s Ernakulam district. He began his studies
in Panangad then continued to St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary in Ernakulam. He completed Philosophy and Theology
at Papal Seminary Pune. He was ordained a priest in1984 at the cathedral of Verapoly.
After completing his Doctorate in Canon Law in Rome, he served as the official of the Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care for six years from 1993.
The bishop-elect served as the secretary of the Commission for Health under the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) for ten years starting 1999.
Before his appointment as the Vicar general, he was also Chancellor of Verapoly archdiocese and directed
Communications Arts Cochin. He was also the project director for the CBCI Society of Medical Education in North India, based at Ranchi, Jharkhand.
We, the canonists know him as a zealous and committed priest, an able leader and an efficient administrator especially during his tenure as President of CLSI from 2009 to 2013. His ability to relate to everyone is laudable. His humility and sincerity will help him shepherd the faithful of Kannur Diocese admirably.
